Timber doors in East Sussex

We survey, make and fit made-to-measure timber doors throughout East Sussex, covering 11 towns from the workshop to the fitted door.

Coastal openings. Brighton, Hove, Eastbourne, Hastings, Bexhill-on-Sea, Seaford and others sit close enough to open water that salt-laden air drives the specification: Accoya or dense hardwood, a high-build microporous coating and grade A4 marine stainless ironmongery.

Conservation areas. Lewes, Rye, Battle carry designated conservation areas or listed frontages. Like-for-like timber replacement is rarely refused; changing material or glazing pattern usually is. We produce drawings for consent applications.

Common questions

Which ironmongery survives salt air?

Grade A4 (marine) stainless steel. Standard A2 stainless and lacquered brass both fail within a few years within about a mile of open water.

Does sea air really affect a timber door?

Yes, in two ways. Salt is hygroscopic so it holds moisture against the surface, and airborne chloride corrodes standard ironmongery quickly. Both are solvable at specification stage.

What door suits a Georgian townhouse?

Six raised-and-fielded panels under a fanlight, in a painted finish. Proportion is everything: the panels step in size up the door rather than repeating equally.

How wide can a single door be?

Around 1,100mm for a standard leaf before the weight starts to work against the hinges. Beyond that a pair or a leaf-and-a-half arrangement is the sensible answer.

Can I see a sample before ordering?

Timber and finish samples are available so you can see the colour on the actual species in your own light, which rarely matches a printed chart.

What if I only want a repair?

Then we quote a repair. Splicing a bottom rail, easing a dropped leaf or replacing a failed cill is often the right answer on a door worth keeping.
