Timber doors in Gwynedd

We survey, make and fit made-to-measure timber doors throughout Gwynedd, covering 8 towns from the workshop to the fitted door.

Coastal openings. Bangor, Caernarfon, Pwllheli, Porthmadog, Barmouth, Criccieth sit close enough to open water that salt-laden air drives the specification: Accoya or dense hardwood, a high-build microporous coating and grade A4 marine stainless ironmongery.

Conservation areas. Caernarfon carry designated conservation areas or listed frontages. Like-for-like timber replacement is rarely refused; changing material or glazing pattern usually is. We produce drawings for consent applications.

Common questions

What timber holds up best near the coast?

Accoya first, then dense hardwoods. Modified timber barely moves with humidity swings, which is exactly the load a coastal door is under.

How often should a coastal door be recoated?

Three to five years on exposed elevations, against seven or more inland. Salt-facing elevations always go first.

What door suits a stone cottage?

A ledged, braced and boarded door with long strap hinges. Openings are usually low and rarely square, so the door is made to the opening as found.

How do I look after the finish?

Wash the door twice a year with mild soapy water and check the bottom rail and cill for standing water. Recoating intervals depend on exposure and aspect — south and west elevations go first.

What if my opening is not square?

Very few are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several heights and the door is made to suit, with the frame packed and scribed on fitting.

Is there a guarantee?

Ten years on the joinery and the factory finish, with the survey record kept so any claim is straightforward to deal with.
