We survey, make and fit made-to-measure timber doors throughout North Yorkshire, covering 13 towns from the workshop to the fitted door.

Coastal openings. Scarborough, Whitby sit close enough to open water that salt-laden air drives the specification: Accoya or dense hardwood, a high-build microporous coating and grade A4 marine stainless ironmongery.

Conservation areas. York, Harrogate, Skipton, Ripon, Whitby, Knaresborough among others carry designated conservation areas or listed frontages. Like-for-like timber replacement is rarely refused; changing material or glazing pattern usually is. We produce drawings for consent applications.

Common questions

What drawings will I need for an application?

Usually an elevation at 1:20, a section through the door and frame showing mouldings, and a written specification of timber, finish and glazing. We produce these.

What do conservation officers usually object to?

Wrong material, wrong glazing pattern, and mouldings that are close but not right. Timber matching the original pattern is rarely refused.

What door suits a Victorian terrace?

A four-panel door with a bolection moulding and an etched or obscured upper light. Stile widths matter — narrow modern stiles make the proportions look wrong immediately.

How secure is a timber door?

A well-built timber door with a multipoint lock and reinforced keeps is at least as secure as a composite equivalent. The lock and the frame fixings matter more than the leaf material.

Do I need building regulations approval?

Replacing a door like-for-like usually does not need approval, but the new door must meet current thermal and safety-glazing standards. We specify to comply as standard.

Can you make non-standard shapes?

Arched heads, splayed jambs, tapered cills and out-of-square openings are routine. Old buildings are rarely square and we build to the opening as found.
